How to study a language

My first language I learned was Spanish…the best I can do now is “como te llamas?” I took that for 4 years in high school and 1 year in college. I still am not good at spanish. When it comes to Japanese I am able to conversate, read and write (well, type haha). These are the steps how I ACTUALLY learned a language in school!

  1. Have a CLEAR goal

Now what does this mean? Sure “I want to be able to speak Japanese!” is a goal, but let’s be a bit more specific. Do you want to be able to read a newspaper? Work in Japan? Read books? What is your end goal? My goal was a bit unique – Yes I wanted to speak Japanese – but my main goal as to prove to myself that I could do it. Your goal is YOUR goal. You do not have to justify why you do anything to anyone! This is why I emphasize keeping your goals a secret.
